Murder of Mehmet Kubaşık

Mehmet Kubaşık

In June 2004, Mehmet Kubaşık bought a kiosk in Dortmund and became self-employed. In the Ruhr region, “Trinkhallen” (drink stalls), like the one Mehmet Kubaşık ran, are widespread and popular. They sell magazines, sweets, drinks and cigarettes until late at night. The shop on the four-lane Mallinckrodtstraße 190 was open from seven in the morning until one at night. The whole family helped out. On the morning of 4 April 2006, Mehmet Kubaşık had breakfast with his wife. Because she had a visit from her sister from London, her husband took over the midday shift. Their daughter Gamze took her little brother to kindergarten, went to school, and planned to relieve her father in the afternoon. When she came back, he was dead. Gamze was twenty years old at the time; her brothers were six and twelve. The father of three was only 39 years old. After the murder, the family was socially ostracized.
