Letter of Confession Regarding the Doll Torso
Beate Zschäpe

On 11 November 1995, the Jena local editorial office of the Ostthüringer Zeitung, at Am Planetarium 8, received an anonymous letter. It contained a letter of confession from the perpetrators who had hung a doll’s torso from a pipe bridge on Kahlaische Straße on 9 November 1995, together with a Polaroid photograph of the torso bearing a message composed of cut-out letters. It also contained a Polaroid photo of a slogan sprayed on a wall in the city: “Nationaler Widerstand” (National Resistance). During a search of Zschäpe’s flat in 1996, a Polaroid camera and yellow spray paint were found — an important piece of evidence pointing to her authorship of the act. The letter was not published but handed over to the criminal police.
